Porch Gallery is very pleased to present its seventh exhibition, Above Will Affect Below, a new work by Tomas Chaffe. At first glance, Above Will Affect Below purportedly suggests that the gallery's interior is flooding through a leak in the ceiling, abandoned in a state of disarray, disorder and beyond repair. However, on closer inspection, what seemingly appears to be a case of domestic neglect is in fact the result of a highly fabricated reality by the artist. This installation forms part of a sequence of works in which Chaffe aims to amplify the audience’s awareness of the context in which they are viewing artwork. Above Will Affect Below, extending beyond mere simulacrum, could be seen to offer a gentle and playful critique towards the notion of Porch Gallery and its setting. By having the conditions of the space function as the subject of his contribution, Chaffe acknowledges the extent at which peculiar and unconventional spaces for the presentation of art can play an overbearing role within the reading of artwork. It is contexts such as these that may pose a predicament, an obstacle or even function antithetically to works by artists for which they initially intend. In Chaffe’s case, however, it serves as a starting point to a principle facet of investigation

Responding to social and cultural issues as well as environmental aspects of a particular context (on both a specific and more pervasive level) Chaffe’s work seeks to expose both the mechanisms that bear affect on the reception of art and what defines spaces of art display and the display of art.
