“Aware that each monotonous task and every ubiquitous object holds itself amongst a visual and/or social system, I aim to challenge the viewers awareness and sense of perception through my practice. Taking practical, domestic utensils as the initial element of a sculpture, I look to combine familiar materials with them through seemingly simple processes. My hope is that the resulting intervention ignites a responsive reassessment of hierarchy, in terms of understanding the visual and physical aspects of everyday mundanity.”
Jon Turner, 2006

Porch Gallery is very pleased to present its second exhibition 'Groundwork' by Jon Turner. For 'Groundwork' Jon has installed temporary new flooring and taken utensils from the adjoining house and augmented them. The facets of domestic, interior design may render the mundane utensils luxurious or desirable, yet their functionality remains intact. Jon has approached the porch as if it was a 'vitrine, showcase or lightbox, leaving the objects in a space where their identity and purpose can be scrutinised in a domestic context'.

Jon Turner was born in Essex in 1984, and is currently based in Manchester. He gained a BA(Hons)Fine Art Sculpture from Manchester Metropolitan University. Currently Jon is showing in A Celebration of Talent: Recent Graduates from Salford University and MMU- URBIS. Previously Jon has shown in Apartment Presents Contents may Vary-Apartment. He is also a member of the Manchester based collective 'Contents May Vary', with whom he has co-organised, co-curated and shown in a range of projects including: Variables, TEN, Dive (all Manchester) and WhereTo? (London). Recently Jon has contributed to Objects in Waiting (Sheffield) and GIFT (Liverpool).
