Porch proudly presents its first exhibition ‘Trajectory’ by Chris Clarke. ‘Trajectory’ is a sculptural installation to be made during the exhibition. It will consist of several drawings on A4 paper, crumpled and piled on the floor of the porch. Starting from a single sketch of a crumpled piece of paper, drawn from imagination, this work accumulates in a straightforward progression. That initial drawing/scuplture is used as a model for the next drawing, which, upon completion, is crumpled and discarded onto the gallery floor, where it is used as a model for the repeated process. Following the performative aspect of the work, when the space has been satisfactorily filled with pieces of paper (after an arbitrarily determined amount of time) the installation remains as the physical documentation of a number of illustrations which are left invisible to the viewer. In the work, there is the suggestion of the creative process as one of selection and omission, distilling the image into an eventual complete, finished work (and throwing the waste product over the artist’s shoulder). However, this ‘trajectory’ which presupposes a destination, is ultimately aimless, going around in circles, repeating the same motifs and ideas. There is only the buildup of refused drawings. Following the exhibition of this work, these crumpled drawings will be unfurled and collated into an artists book Chris Clarke was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada and is currently based in Manchester, England. He has exhibited internationally, at galleries and venues including Cork Artist Collective, Ireland; Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco, USA; Eastern Edge Gallery, Newfoundland, Canada; Surface Gallery, Nottingham; Cornerhouse Projects, Manchester; and Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art, Japan. |
